Stilleven van vissen, a 1990 oil painting by W. Pierre, hand-signed, an original work in excellent condition, 50 by 60 cm, from Belgium, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Original oil painting on canvas depicting dried plaice, a classic and recognizable theme from the maritime life of Ostend. The fish are hanging, portrayed soberly and powerfully with expressive brushwork and a restrained color palette of earth tones, grays and ochers.
The work is signed “W. Pierre” in the bottom right and is offered in a frame with a nameplate, which indicates a presentation intended by or for the artist.
The presentation closely aligns with the oeuvre of Willie Pierre, who in his work often draws on everyday reality: objects from the coastal living environment, the hospitality industry, and food, translated into hushed, tangible compositions. The still life here functions not only as a record, but also carries a certain symbolism of impermanence, labor, and craft.
About the artist
Willie Pierre was born in Lesneven (Brittany, France) and was professionally active in the hospitality and food sector. He was a former teacher at the Training Institute and the Hotel School of Ostend.
As a self-taught artist, he began painting at an early age and completed his training with the Ostend painter-graphic artist Marc Plettinck, his mentor.
