A silver oval Chinese box of circa 1900–1910 in late Qing/early Republic style, 5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide and 2.5 cm high, weighing 18 g, with a pierced lid showing two rabbits around a Shou medallion and a repoussé body with carp and aquatic motifs, likely used for a singing cricket or as a scent box, in very good condition with original patina and functional hinge and precise closure; non-punched, tested with touchstone.
Description from the seller
An exceptional small oval collectible box, probably intended for carrying a singing cricket or for use as a scent box. The object bears witness to the refinement of the accessories of Chinese literati at the end of the Qing dynasty or the early Republic period.
Decoration and Symbolism:
Lid: Delicately pierced openwork carving depicting two rabbits (symbols of longevity and the Moon) among foliage and clusters of fruit. In the center is a medallion bearing the stylized Shou (壽) character, emblem of long life.
Body: The side wall is decorated in raised relief with aquatic motifs, including koi (symbols of perseverance and success) swimming among the waves and aquatic plants.
Technical specifications
Material: Silver (or silver-rich metal), unmarked (tested with a touchstone recommended). Nice patina of age with natural oxidation in the reliefs.
Technique: lost-wax casting, hand chasing, openwork and repoussé.
Condition: Very good overall condition. Original patina preserved. The hinge is functional and the closure is precise.
