Description from the seller
Pair of andirons for the fireplace in gilded brass and iron – France, first half of the 19th century
Description
Elegant pair of gilded cast-brass andirons for the fireplace, with a back frame in wrought iron, made in France in the first half of the 19th century.
The alari feature a refined decoration of facing dolphins, an ornamental motif of unmistakably late Baroque origin, very common in French production in the early years of the nineteenth century.
The plastic rendering of the figures, the solid casting, and the warm patina of brass attest to a production of good quality, dating from before industrial standardization.
The iron back bar, square in cross-section, is consistent with antique craftsmanship and shows signs of hand-forging. Objects designed for functional use in the fireplace, but today appreciated mainly as decor elements with a strong character.
