Description:
Beautiful Edwardian solid sterling silver "Vesta Case" matchbox. (.925).
Details:
Origin: England, Birmingham.
Year: 1902 (date letter "c").
Silversmith: John Grinsell & Sons (Mark JG & S).
Weight: 22 grams.
Decoration: Superb hand-engraved scrollwork. Central cartouche empty (possibility to have initials engraved).
Condition: Very good condition for an item of 124 years. The lid closes perfectly with a solid “click”. Hallmarks very clear and legible (Walking Lion, Anchor, Date Letter).
Ideal for a silver collector or display piece.

A beautiful and classic Edwardian sterling silver Vesta case (matchsafe), featuring intricate hand-engraved foliate scrollwork. This piece was manufactured by the renowned silversmiths John Grinsell & Sons in 1902.
Design & Details:
Decoration: Both sides are decorated with deep, crisp foliate engravings. The front features a "vacant cartouche" (shield), allowing for a future owner to add their own initials if desired.
Construction: Equipped with a secure suspension loop for attachment to an Albert watch chain. The lid remains tight with a good snap, and the striker plate on the base is in excellent condition.
Hallmarks: Fully hallmarked on the interior rim with the Maker’s Mark ‘JG & S’, the Anchor (Birmingham), the Lion Passant (Sterling Silver), and the date letter ‘c’ (1902).
Condition Report:
The item is in very good antique condition. The hallmarks are exceptionally clear and crisp. There are no major dents or repairs; only light surface wear and a natural patina consistent with its 124-year age.
