Frans Callebaut (1856-1930) - Haystacks

Franz Callebaut was a Belgian artist, born in Teralfene in 1856 and died in Aalst in 1930. A painter, he drew inspiration from the landscapes of Flemish Brabant and the Scheldt River. As a pharmacist, Callebaut was very busy and primarily painted in the evenings. At the beginning of his career, he also attended evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In his youth, he met Isidore Meyers and Franz Courtens, who taught him at the Dendermonde School of Painting. They introduced him to Scheldt landscape painting, and under their influence, Callebaut developed into an Impressionist landscape painter. Influenced by the Dendermonde School, he worked with clear lines, briefly embraced Pointillism, and later tended towards a restrained Expressionist style. He was the first chairman of the Aalst Artists' Circle (1909–1929) and worked at the Aalst Town Hall. He also worked as a pharmacist. Mentioned in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists.
