Vedute del Vesuvio, a work by Giorgio Sommer, unsigned, in excellent condition, an 1880 print (20 x 24.5 cm) in the art photography genre, featuring ten colourised photographs mounted on a black passepartout.
Description from the seller
A very rare and beautiful set of 10 colored photographic reproductions, mounted at the edges on a black passepartout. The photographs come from the photographic studio of Giorgio Sommer and Edmund Behles, active in Naples from 1856 to 1860. In Pompeii, especially, Sommer produced on behalf of the Administration of the Excavations many works both to sell on the tourist market, being strongly fascinated by the recent discoveries at Pompeii, and for archival purposes.
The coloring of the photographs was done by hand with watercolor paints. Giorgio Sommer sold a large number of images of Pompeii, but the colored ones were more expensive and therefore rarer. The size of the photographs is 24.5 x 19.8 cm, the original mat is 36 x 31 cm. In excellent condition: never exhibited and kept in acid-free envelopes and boxes.
Accurate shipping.
