Description from the seller
Monet or the Triumph of Impressionism
Daniel Wildenstein
No other artist, apart from William Turner, has strived as much as Claude Monet (1840–1926) to effectively render light itself on the canvas. Among all the impressionists, he was the man whom Cézanne said, 'it's only an eye, but good God, what an eye!' for staying true to the principle of absolute fidelity to visual perception, painting directly from nature.
It could be said that Monet reinvented the possibilities of color. Whether it was due to his initial interest in Japanese prints, the period he spent as a conscripted soldier under the blazing sun of Algeria, or his personal knowledge of the leading painters of the late nineteenth century, Monet's output over the course of his long life would forever change the way we perceive the natural world as well as the phenomena that occur within it. The culmination of his research is represented by the last Water Lilies, painted in the garden at Giverny, which—almost entirely abandoning any formal constraint—truly mark the origin of abstract painting.
In addition to doing full justice to an artist of exceptional talent and enormous influence, this biography is accompanied by numerous reproductions and archival photographs, as well as witty and well-documented texts.
Wildenstein D.; Monet or the Triumph of Impressionism. Hardcover, dust jacket, 24 x 34 cm, 480 pages, Italian language; Cologne, Taschen, 2000.
The volume is in excellent overall condition. The dust jacket and cover are intact. The binding is solid. The inner pages are clean with no stains, showing a couple of marks on the edges. Excellent collectible copy.
