Description from the seller

Old Russian Orthodox icon – Head of Saint John the Baptist
St. John the Forerunner (Saint John, the Head of the Forerunner)

An extraordinary Russian Orthodox icon of notable spiritual and artistic presence, painted on a wooden panel and decorated with a richly worked golden background. The composition represents one of the most solemn themes in Eastern Christian iconography: the Head of Saint John the Baptist, the Forerunner, laid on a ceremonial platter, a symbol of martyrdom and of absolute fidelity to the faith.

The face, with a serene and deeply contemplative expression, is executed with great sensitivity, highlighting the delicacy of the modeling, the fluidity of the hair, and the solemnity of the gesture. The halo, fashioned with incised rays, reinforces the sacredness of the scene.
The background appears completely ornamented with a refined punched floral pattern in the shape of stars, creating a gold tapestry effect that adds visual richness and a deeply liturgical character. The decorative edge features traditional geometric motifs, typical of the Russian school, with details in dark and blue tones.

At the top, the original inscription in Cyrillic is preserved, identifying the image as:
Saint John the Baptist – the Head of the Forerunner
