A unique and exceptional art book by Jacques Gruber, a figure of ART NOUVEAU, featuring a complete and exhaustive presentation of the protean and avant-garde work of this artist.
Paintings, furniture, design, watercolors, stained glass, ceramics, etc.—a complete body of work.
A large illustrated retrospective of the artist's work, in the form of an illustrated and annotated catalogue raisonné of Jacques Gruber's artistic oeuvre.
Some descriptive elements:
Jacques Gruber (1870-1936) belongs to the second generation of artists of the École de Nancy. Gallé, Majorelle, the Daum brothers, or Prouvé are already well-known figures in the artistic avant-garde when Jacques Gruber returns to Nancy in 1893, after studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Between 1893 and 1897, he collaborates with the Daum manufactory and creates vase models in a repertoire of historical or mythological figurative motifs.
Before turning increasingly to stained glass from 1900 onward, Gruber expressed himself in a wide range of fields: posters, menus and printed matter, paintings and pastels. The projects carried out with René Wiener bear witness to his interest in artistic bookbinding. His participation in the creation of the La Source table with Louis Majorelle marks the beginning of work on art objects and pieces of furniture. With a decor drawn from the heart of nature, he proposes furniture privileging a dynamic and undulating movement.
In the years 1904-1905, Gruber collaborates with the Rambervillers factory on models of forms and architectural ceramics in stoneware. Lamp bases, vases, plant pots and umbrella stands demonstrate a design sensibility inspired by plants. But it is as a master glassmaker, specialized in stained glass, that Jacques Gruber earns genuine critical recognition.
Stained glass windows illustrate his predilection for the vegetal repertoire, but also his pursuit of scholarly composition and mastery of sophisticated techniques, achieved through the layering of glass in a wide variety of textures (relief, colored, engraved, iridescent...). From 1893 to 1914, Jacques Gruber set himself to experimenting in diverse fields of creation and developed his own artistic vocabulary, marked by “the analytical science of drawing, the sense of decorative composition as synthesis, and the appropriation of materials in their execution.”
Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Jacques Gruber and Art Nouveau. A Decorative Journey', organized by the City of Nancy and the École de Nancy Museum at the Poirel Galleries in Nancy, from 16 September 2011 to 22 January 2012.
