Polychrome Egyptian funerary statuette – Oarsman
Funerary wooden statuette depicting a rower, with traces of polychromy.
Saite Period, Twenty-sixth Dynasty (circa 664–525 BCE, about 2,500 years ago).
Height: 12.5 cm (excluding the base).
Sold with its base.
Provenance: Acquired from a Parisian antique dealer, previously sold at auction. (Catawiki has verified the invoice and the certificate of authenticity).

Historical context
These statuettes were part of models of funerary boats placed in the tombs of ancient Egypt. They depicted rowers ensuring the deceased a safe passage to the afterlife and the realm of Osiris. Generally painted and finely carved, they accompanied the journey of the deceased through the mythical waters of the underworld.
The Saite period (26th Dynasty) was a time of artistic and cultural renewal, marked by a return to New Kingdom traditions while incorporating certain foreign influences. The works of this era are distinguished by their exquisite craftsmanship and understated elegance.
