Description from the seller
Exquisite commode, Louis XV, Rosewood, late 18th century – France
Exceptional commode sautoir (sauteuse) made in France at the dawn of the nineteenth century. Entirely veneered in extraordinary rosewood, whose grains combine to create subtle ornaments. In addition, the glossy finish further enhances the splendor of its grain. This exquisite piece rises on four short sabre-legged feet, the front with gilt bronze sabots. On its front it features two drawers with two pulls and an elaborated lock. All fittings, including the pulls and escutcheons, are gilt bronze and chased. Large storage capacity. The sides display a geometric marquetry design. Marble top in gray with white veining original to the period, following the curved profile.
Rosewood, especially from Brazil and India, has an extraordinary grain with dark tones and purplish, brown, and golden reflections; this exotic appearance made it perfect for the ornamentation of high-end furniture. The Louis XV style, characterized by elegance and sophistication, sought refined materials. Rosewood, being a precious and expensive wood, was a symbol of status and wealth. It is an extremely hard wood resistant to the passage of time, ensuring that the furniture would preserve its splendor for generations.
More about the Louis XV Style
The Louis XV Style is an artistic style, especially prominent in decorative arts, developed during the reign of Louis XV (1715-1774). Initially the term “Louis XV Style” referred to a characteristic type of chairs, but it soon extended to all the arts of the era. This style was the creation of cabinetmakers as a result of a major technical advance in woodworking furniture fabrication. It is identified with the architectural style known as Rococo. Like Rococo, it features profuse decoration and detail, in contrast with the later “Louis XVI Style,” which tends to be simpler.
