Description from the seller
Antique brass carbide lamp - Vitaphare (France) - c. 1915
Description (NL): Beautiful and complete carbide lamp from the well-known French brand Vitaphare (Hétier Frères, Paris). This specimen is made of heavy brass and is in a wonderful original condition with an authentic patina.
The lamp features the characteristic beveled green side glass panes ("jewels") that are still completely intact. Includes the original mounting bracket and wing nuts. The Vitaphare monogram is clearly visible on the rear. An iconic piece of industrial technology from the early 20th century.
Material: Brass / Glass
Period: 1910 - 1920
Origin: France
Condition: Good used condition, not polished to preserve the patina.
This specific Vitaphare carbide lamp was designed as vehicle lighting. Given its size and the specific construction of the mounting bracket, this type of lamp was mounted in two ways:
1. On a luxury bicycle
This is the most common application for this format. The lamp was mounted on the front of the bicycle on a so-called lamp hook. This hook was usually screwed to the quill stem or to the fork crown of the bicycle.
2. On an early motorcycle
Between 1910 and 1920, motorcycles were often still “reinforced bicycles” with an auxiliary engine. These Vitaphare lamps were robust enough to be fitted on the lamp bracket of an early motorcycle (such as an early Triumph, BSA, or a French make like Terrot).
