Description from the seller

An illustrated set of 116 plates in 6 volumes from one of the great educational syntheses of the 18th century in the physical sciences, offering a methodical and progressive presentation of the experiments that underpin our knowledge of natural phenomena.

Abbé Nollet was the first in France to perform experiments with the Leyden bottle and one of the first to publish the connection between light and electrical sparks.

Each volume clearly and precisely develops demonstrations on electricity, hydraulics, optics, mechanics, and acoustics, relying on ingenious devices that Nollet designed for his public lectures and court demonstrations, making it a valuable testimony to the popularization of science during the Enlightenment.

The whole collection illustrates the desire to make recent discoveries accessible to a broad audience, while affirming the central role of experiment in the construction of knowledge, and marks a decisive step in the dissemination of experimental sciences in Europe.

Abbé Nollet - Leçons de Physique Expérimentale - 1748/1765 - Tome I, II, III, IV, V et VI - Hippolyte-Louis Guérin & Louis-François Delatour -
XCVI,379, 488 [3], IV 511, [2]535, VI, [2] 592, IV, 527 Pages.

Good condition of the bindings, volumes in their full brown calf from the period, wear from use, some bumped heads, corners and spines worn, edges of three volumes red and the other three gilt, backs with raised bands, gold lettering and tomes on maroon leather pieces.
