Description from the seller
Richard Smeets (Gennep, 1955) is a Dutch visual artist, known for his lyrical semi-abstract paintings and sculptures. He studied at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts from 1973 to 1978 and developed into an artist with international recognition.
Smeets' work is thematically structured in three periods. In the first period the woman is central. The second period is inspired by his travels to Malaysia and Indonesia, the birthplace of his mother. In the third period he focuses on the Dutch landscape.
His paintings are characterized by a layered working method, transforming impressions into memories, then into dreams, and finally into images. He works from his studio in Heijen, and his work is exhibited both domestically and abroad, including the Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United States.
