Eye Idol, an alabaster sculpture from the Eastern Mediterranean dating to circa 3700–3300 BC, with a rectangular body and four stylised eyes, measuring 8 × 9.3 × 1 cm, in good condition and formerly from a private Belgian collection (acquired 2015).
Description from the seller
Alabaster eye idol.
8 x 9.5 x 1 cm, good condition, accretions. Black traces around the eyes.
It features a flat, rectangular body topped with pairs of stylized eyes, a typic aesthetic of the Naqada or Uruk period.
These idols are generally associated with cultures of the ancient Near East, notably Mesopotamia, and often date from the 4th millennium BCE.
They are considered ritual or votive objects, perhaps offerings made to the deities.
The form and material are typical of this type of archaeological artifact.
The multiplication of the eyes (four here) symbolizes omniscience or a constant attention paid to the deities.
