Description from the seller
SALE WITHIN the EU ONLY (Due to CITES regulations)
Rare ivory Corpus Christi sculpture – Portugal, 17th century (possibly Goa)
Dimensions of the corpus: 15 x 13 cm
In a wooden frame with velvet background
Beautiful 17th-century ivory figurine of Christ on the cross (Corpus Christi), probably made in Portugal or possibly in Goa (Portuguese India). Such devotional sculptures were often produced in colonial workshops for the European market in the 17th century, combining European iconography with refined Eastern ivory carving.
The corpus displays an expressive and finely worked anatomy, with particular attention to facial expression, the loincloth, and body proportions. The style and workmanship are characteristic of Lusophone-Indian religious art.
The statue is set in a wooden frame with a velvet background, lending the piece a dignified, collectible presentation.
Condition:
In good condition given its age. The ivory shows typical signs of age such as natural discoloration and characteristic cracks from drying, inherent to antique ivory. No recent damage or restorations visible.
A special and authentic collectible for enthusiasts of religious art, colonial art, or early modern ivory sculpture.
