Description from the seller

Seated Buddha in meditation
Laos, 17th-18th century
Ethnic craftsmanship
Bronze with a dark patina
H. 20 cm x 12.5 cm x 9 cm
Depiction of the seated Buddha in meditation (Bhumisparsha mudra), the right hand lightly touching the earth as a sign of awakening. The body is modeled with sobriety, with rounded shoulders, a high chest, and a stable stance on his throne.
The face with a gentle, meditative smile, almond-shaped eyes closed, and finely arched lips embodies the inner peace of Buddha. A beautiful finesse in the details despite the very ethnic, folkloric appearance of the subject, with some pronounced features such as the nose. The elongated ears and the hair in regular fine curls, topped by a long, slender ushnisha flame, symbolize wisdom and spiritual elevation. The folds at the neck, slightly marked, constitute one of the essential iconographic traits in representations of the Buddha, symbolizing wisdom, purity, and the physical perfection of the awakened body.
The Buddha is seated on his throne, typical of Lao and Lan Na production. This solid base/throne is sober despite the deformation.
The bronze, patinated by time, shows an irregular patina with brown and greenish reflections, traces of original gold, and mineralization on the surface.
Condition: Good overall condition, with some traces of mineralization and wear. Deformation at the level of the throne.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
