Description from the seller

With Manicomio, Raymond Depardon documents the last years of psychiatric asylums in Italy during the late 1970s, a period of sweeping reform following the passage of Law 180 (Basaglia law), which abolished traditional institutional psychiatric hospitals. Encouraged by psychiatrist Franco Basaglia, Depardon photographed patients, interiors, and daily life in asylums such as those in Trieste, Venice, Naples, Arezzo, and Turin, capturing a vanishing world of confinement and marginalization. The work preserves these images as a historical and human record, paying tribute to both the patients and the anti-psychiatry movement that sought more humane treatment for people with mental illness.
