Rastender Hirt, a 19th‑century oil on wood landscape by Charles Beauverie (1839–1924) in the Barbizon school style, France, signed and sold with frame, 20 × 36.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Charles Beauverie. Lyon, 1839–1923 Pontoise.
A resting shepherd in a summer river landscape.
oil on wood.
Signed bottom right. 20 x 36.5 cm (7.9 x 14.4 inches). Frame: 30 x 46 cm.
Charles Beauverie, a prominent representative of the Barbizon School and close companion of Daubigny, is regarded as one of the most perceptive painters of French provincial landscapes of the 19th century. His work is characterized by an exceptional sensitivity to atmospheric light moods and a naturalistic, poetic rendering of the topography.
Plein-air mastery: The work captivates with a virtuoso, loose brushwork and a subtly graded palette of earth tones and atmospheric grays that perfectly capture the shimmering air of a summer day.
• Arcadian Peace: The depiction of the resting shepherd amid his flock functions as a central motif of slowing down and underscores Beauveries' focus on the harmonious interplay between humans and pristine nature.
• Barbizon School: As a testament to his time in Auvers-sur-Oise and Pontoise, the painting reflects the artistic emancipation from the academic studio toward direct observation of nature.
Iconography of the Idyll: The composition with the gently rising path and the wooded backdrop uses classical depth cueing to evoke a timeless, almost melancholic rural idyll.
• Condition: The painting is in good state of preservation; the high-quality, genuine-gilded frame shows period-typical flaking and abrasions along the edges, which emphasize the authentic character.
• Collector relevance: Beauveries’ works in this painterly quality and on the sought-after support medium wood represent a rare enrichment for any discerning collection of 19th-century French landscape painting.
