Description from the seller
Splendid historic poster for the famous American circus Barnum & Bailey, featuring an extraordinary depiction of a roaring tiger in the foreground, an iconic advertising image of the “Greatest Show on Earth”.
Note: This is a later edition probably from the 1970s.
The subject, attributed to Walter Schanchenberg (an illustrator active in American circus poster art in the first half of the twentieth century), represents one of the most recognizable posters in American circus graphic design.
The composition makes a strong visual impact: the tiger dominates the scene with an intense painterly rendering, jaws wide open and vibrant red/blue chromatics, typical of the great American lithographic tradition.
The graphics evoke the original posters from the early decades of the 1900s tied to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus circuit, regarded as the greatest traveling show of its era.
