Antique set of 4 cowbells / clappers with leather straps – Alpine region – 19th/20th century
For sale is a lot of four different cattle bells (Treicheln) with partly original leather straps from the Alpine region (probably Austria / southern Germany / Switzerland).
The pieces come from different time periods and show artisanal craftsmanship as well as later iterations.
Description of the individual pieces
1. oldest Treichel (probably late 19th – early 20th century)
Hand-forged iron cudgel with a hefty, heavily aged leather strap.
Irregular shape, visible forging marks, old rivets, and the original clapper.
The leather is thick, torn in several places, and clearly dried out.
Authentic, unrestored condition with a developed patina.
2. Large bell, plain (ca. early 20th century)
Heavy iron/steel bell with a strong rust patina.
Plain workmanship without decoration.
Original bobbin available.
3. Large bell with hammered surface (ca. early–mid 20th century)
Clearly visible hammer marks and a textured surface.
Strong oxidation, original clapper.
4. Smaller decorative bell with an Edelweiss motif (circa mid-20th century)
Painted version with a floral motif (edelweiss) and colorful textile trim on the strap.
Typical for Almabtrieb or festive use.

All pieces are in their unrestored original condition with clear signs of aging and wear:
Rust, oxidation, patina, abrasion, hardening, and cracks in leather.
Part of the leather is brittle and no longer suitable for active use.
The bells are to be understood as collector's or decorative objects.

Overall length with strap (largest piece): approximately 30 cm
