Description from the seller
A fine West Asian gold pendant, hammered from a thin sheet of gold, shaped like a leaf. The piece shows raised vertical and horizontal grooves that overlap to form a cross. At the top, in antiquity a small suspension loop was attached, to which a thin gold wire is connected. Some scratches and earthly crusts on the surface as well as distortions on the sides.
In antiquity many great civilizations inhabited the West Asian region, and their wealth and prosperity are evidenced by the highly sophisticated metal jewelry produced. Gold was hammered into a thin layer and fashioned into various shapes. Gold and silver jewelry was adorned with gold granules, glass inlays, and semi-precious stones as well as detailed engravings. Very fine granulation and filigree work were central to West Asian jewelry making and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans.
Dimensions: approx. H 2.4 cm x W 1.1 cm
Weight: 0.25 g
Origin: Ex Japanese private collection and Asian art market.
