Description from the seller

First edition

Bibliotheque des Amans.
[Odes Erotiques; par M. Sylvain M***.] To Gnide.

In Paris, at the Widow Duchesne, Bookseller, at the Temple of Taste, 1777.

pp. [iv], viii, [9]-212.

La Bibliothèque des Amans, a collection of poems that celebrate love, is composed mainly of "Odes Erotiques" with a small final section of various poems, quatrains, hymns and epitaphs. This is Marechal's second published work, published about seven years after his early Bergeries which earned him the nickname "Sylvain", the name by which he is known to this day and which is used on the title page of the present work. In the preface, Marechal explains that the volume is not meant to be very large, but is long enough to fill only those moments when love makes a truce with pleasure to render it spicier.; it concludes with a table of verses in which the melodies to which the various poems can be sung are listed. It includes a poem inspired by events reported in the Gazette de France in October or November 1776.
