ONIE, a painter, sculptor, and composer, was born in 1977 in Orléans. Very young, he attends the courses at the School of Fine Arts where he studies drawing, before moving away from formal academic training to join the street scene through an emerging movement, graffiti. He creates the collective TBS (The Brutal Style) with Skepa and a few other committed graffiti writers.
He later took courses at the Blois Higher School of Graphic Design and Visual Communication, from which he graduated in 1998. He worked as a graphic designer until 2003, the year in which he co-founded Galerie Wall.
In 2006, his painting takes a new path on canvas, figurative compositions, where the drawing he has practised for so long and the representation of the human body play an essential role. Onie likes to paint genre scenes or imaginary ones in which he translates his era with poetry and a touch of irony. Always in search of balance in his works, he imagines carefully crafted compositions with muted colors yet nuanced. The distinctive quality of his painting, his sure and controlled brushwork give him a strong identity.
Inspired at once by graffiti with artists such as Jonone, Keith Haring, Cope2, and by free figuration in the style of Robert Combas or Hervé Di Rosa, he searches everywhere. But his greatest inspirations are drawn from the entire period of modern art, and he regards Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Max Beckmann, Francis Bacon, Alberto Giacometti, James Ensor, Paul Gauguin, and Egon Schiele as his true masters. Onie, in the lineage of George Condo, likes to talk about the concept of “artificial realism” or “neo-Cubism.”
