ONIE, painter, sculptor and composer, was born in 1977 in Orléans. At a very young age he attended courses at the École supérieure des beaux-arts where he studied drawing, before distancing himself from formal academic training to join the street scene through an emerging movement, graffiti. He founded the collective TBS (The Brutal Style) with Skepa and a few other committed graffiti writers.
He later attended the School of Graphic Design and Visual Communication in Blois, from which he graduated in 1998. He worked as a graphic designer until 2003, the year he co-founded Galerie Wall.
In 2006, his painting took a new path on canvas, with figurative compositions where the drawing he has practiced for a long time and the portrayal of the body occupy a central place. Onie loves to paint genre scenes or imagined visions in which he translates his era with poetry and a touch of irony. Always seeking balance in his works, he imagines carefully crafted compositions with muted colors that are nuanced throughout. The distinctive quality of his painting, his confident and controlled brushwork, gives him a strong identity.
Inspired both by graffiti with artists like Jonone, Keith Haring, Cope 2, through to free figuration in the vein of Robert Combas or Hervé Di Rosa, he searches everywhere. But his greatest inspirations are drawn from the entire span of modern art, and he regards Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Max Beckmann, Francis Bacon, Alberto Giacometti, James Ensor, Paul Gauguin, and Egon Schiele as his true masters. Onie, in the vein of George Condo, enjoys talking about the concept of "artificial realism" or "neo-Cubism".
