Description from the seller
Large Makkum Tichelaar wall plate (39 cm) – Biblical scene: Balaam and the donkey – Hand-painted
For sale is a splendid, antique wall plate from the world-renowned manufacturer Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum (Netherlands).
The plate captivates with its impressive size and finely executed blue painting.
The motif:
Depicted is the famous biblical story of Balaam and his donkey (Numbers 22). You see the moment when the Angel of the Lord, with drawn sword, blocks the donkey's path while Balaam tries to drive the animal forward. In the background, other figures are suggested in a hilly landscape.
Details & Condition:
• Origin: Makkum, Netherlands (original mark on the back: a coat of arms with crossed hammers and the inscription “Makkum”).
• Diameter: generous 39 cm (a true statement piece).
• Technique: traditional faience painting in blue on white glaze.
• Condition: The plate is in good, age-appropriate condition. As seen in the detail photos, there are small, typical glaze chips at the rim, which on genuine old ceramics of this kind are almost inevitable and emphasize the authentic character. No cracks visible.
• Special feature: includes a sturdy wall mounting made of wire.
This plate is not only a collectible for lovers of Dutch ceramics, but also a special decorative piece for classic or rustic interiors.
