Utrecht, 1617 – Lion Dollar
Attributed to the VOC wreck discovery Campen (1627)

Silver

Struck under the master of mint Hendrik Hendriksz. van Domselaar, with the city coat of arms of Utrecht as mintmark.

Obverse:
Armoured knight facing left, head turned to the right. In front of the knight a shield with the coat of arms of Holland, with the lion clearly visible. Within a dotted circle; legend ending with the mintmark of Utrecht.
Legend: CONFIDENS + DNO + NON + MOVETVR + 1617 +
("Trusting in the Lord I am not moved", year 1617.)

Reverse:
Legend in a circle.
Legend: MO • ARG • PRO • CONFOE • BELG • TRA •
("Silver coin of the United Provinces, Utrecht.")
In the field: CONFIDENS DOMINO NON MOVETUR
("He who trusts in the Lord does not waver.")

Condition:
Sharp and clear lion; sea corrosion, particularly visible in parts of the inscription and the field.

Provenance:
This specimen is attributed to the famous VOC wreck discovery of the ship Campen, which sank in 1627 near the Isle of Wight. In this wreck discovery have been found, among others, lion dollars from the year 1617.
