Description from the seller

Louis Derijks (1929-2020) was a Dutch artist and teacher, born in Aalst. He began figurative with religious themes and still lifes, but after 1960 he increasingly moved toward abstraction, often using special materials such as handmade paper and walnut ink. His work breathes stillness and spirituality, influenced by his religious background and interest in contemplation. Derijks won Eindhoven municipality’s painting prize in 1959 and received a retrospective exhibition at Museum Kempenland in 1995. His oeuvre is known for contemplation, simplicity and rich materiality.

This monumental work plays with layering, rhythm and transparency. In three vertical panels unfolds an abstract game of light and shadow, in which contours of windows or doors seem to emerge – forms that are as tangible as they are fleeting. Derijks uses a combination of graphic lines, rough brushstrokes and soft hazy layers to create a sense of depth and movement.

The work has some damage on the back.

This artwork comes from the collection of the Eindhoven Museum. In the context of the transition to Museumpark Vonk, selected works are being disposed of, so that the museum can fully focus on the history and identity of Eindhoven.

Dimensions with frame: 82 x 153 cm
Dimensions without frame: 80 x 151 cm

The work is viewable in our gallery. Furthermore, Art Dumay also has a picture framing shop (this year their 85th anniversary) and a restoration studio. So if you would like to make use of these, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
