Description from the seller
Classic Dutch translation of Goethe's Faust in a beautiful stamp-bound binding with printed margins, around 1890. No year in the book.
The translator Jojhannes Jacobus Lodewijk ten Kate (1819-1889) was a pastor, poet and translator. He introduced much German Romanticism into NL.
In Goethe's Faust the scholar Faust makes a pact with the devil Mephistopheles: in exchange for knowledge, sensual pleasure and earthly fulfilment his soul will descend once he experiences a moment of perfect satisfaction. His seduction and the ruin of Gretchen show the moral consequences of his quest, but ultimately Faust is saved by persistent striving and divine grace.
Beautiful leather-stamped binding with gold decorations, see photos. Some pages with rust spots and some wear, but overall a handsome copy.
