Klassieke Nederlandse vertaling van Goethe's Faust in een mooie stempelband met gedrukte steendrukken, met drukrand. Rond 1890 gedrukt. Geen jaartal in het boek. 
De vertaler Jojhannes Jacobus Lodewijk ten Kate (1819-1889) was predikant, dichter en vertaler. Hij introduceerde veel Duitse Romantiek in NL. 

In Goethes Faust sluit de geleerde Faust een pact met de duivel Mephistopheles: in ruil voor kennis, zinnelijk genot en aardse vervulling zal zijn ziel vervallen zodra hij een moment van volmaakte tevredenheid ervaart. Zijn verleiding en ondergang van Gretchen tonen de morele gevolgen van zijn streven, maar uiteindelijk wordt Faust door blijvend streven en goddelijke genade verlost.

Mooie leren stempelband met gouddecoraties, zie foto's. Sommige pagina's met roestvlekjes en wat gebruiksschade maar over het algemeen een mooi exemplaar.
