Description from the seller

Shaka Hassō Yamato Bunko (釈迦八相倭文庫) – Complete 2-Volume Set
Kaei 8 (1855)
Written by Mantei Ōga | Illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III)
Edo-period Kusazōshi (Illustrated Woodblock Book)

Offered here is a complete two-volume set of Shaka Hassō Yamato Bunko, published in Kaei 8 (1855), during the final decade of the Edo period.

The text was written by Mantei Ōga, a popular gesaku author active in late Edo literary circles, and the illustrations were created by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), one of the most influential masters of the Utagawa school. This collaboration represents a refined example of mid-19th century commercial publishing culture in Edo.

The work depicts the “Eight Phases of the Life of Shakyamuni” (Shaka Hassō)—a classical Buddhist narrative theme covering the Buddha’s birth, renunciation, enlightenment, teaching, and nirvana. While rooted in religious subject matter, the presentation follows the dynamic and theatrical style of kusazōshi literature, making the story accessible and visually engaging for Edo-period urban readers.

The volumes are richly illustrated with expressive ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Kunisada’s refined figure drawing, elaborate kimono patterns, and elegant compositional balance are clearly evident. The integration of text and image exemplifies the aesthetic sophistication of late Edo popular print culture.
