These nuggets come from the desert region of Tiris Zemmour in northern Mauritania, more than a hundred kilometers from an area named Guelb Ndour.
Gold mining in this country was once reserved for a large industrial company only.
But since 2016 individual prospecting has been authorized using metal detectors.

I offer them as I found them; I have only cleaned them with soapy water.

The gold from this region is fairly pure; generally its fineness is around 950 to 980 thousandths, corresponding to 22.80 to 23.50 carats.

Although gold mining has become one of Mauritania’s main resources, nuggets are fairly rare because almost all of the gold is melted into ingots that are then sent to Dubai.

I photographed these nuggets as sincerely and accurately as possible using daylight.
