Description from the seller
A very old orthodox icon of Saint Nicholas of Myra, who in the East is often venerated as “Nicholas the Wonderworker” (Russian: Икона Святителя Николая Чудотворца Ikona Swjatitelja Nikolaja Tschudotworza).
Hand-painted on wood
Dimensions: 31 x 25 x 2 cm
Style: Saint Nicholas is regarded as one of the most venerated saints in the Orthodox Church and is invoked as the protector of travelers, sailors and children. The Church Slavonic inscriptions beside the head identify him as “St. Nicholas” (Святой Николай).
Saint Nicholas is depicted in episcopal attire with a magnificent mitre (head covering). In his left hand he holds a closed Gospel book, while the right hand is raised in blessing.
In the upper corners, Christ (left) and the Mother of God (right) are depicted, handing him the insignia of his office—the Gospel and the Omophorion (bishop’s stole).
Despite the age, the decorations on the Gospel book and the fine folds of the garment are still clearly visible, which testifies to the painter’s craftsmanship.
From my private collection, a special piece for collectors
The antique icon is in fair condition with signs of aging.
