Offered here is an original Edo-period woodblock-printed edition of Shiranui Monogatari, Volume 31, complete in two volumes, published in Man’en 1 (1860).

This work was written by the celebrated gesaku author Ryūtei Tanehiko, one of the leading literary figures of late Edo popular fiction. The illustrations are by the eminent ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III), one of the most prolific and internationally recognized artists of the Utagawa school.

Notably, the cover illustration bears the Toyokuni signature, adding further artistic and collector appeal. Kunisada’s refined linework, elegant figure compositions, and vivid coloration are clearly expressed throughout the volumes, making this work valuable not only as literature but also as an art object.

The lower volume shows very minor wormholing (extremely small insect damage).
The cover illustration retains remarkably strong and vivid colors considering its age (over 160 years old), which is particularly noteworthy for Edo-period printed books.
General signs of age and light wear are present, consistent with antique Japanese woodblock books.
