Description from the seller
Johannes Rostad (1946–2022) – “Primstav” (2005) – Monumental diptych, oil on canvas
Two monumental abstract paintings (diptych) by Johannes Rostad – “Primstav” series, 2005
This lot comprises two original large-scale paintings by Norwegian artist Johannes Rostad (1946–2022), created in 2005 as part of his “Primstav” series. The works form a coherent diptych and are intended to be presented together as a single visual composition.
Executed in oil on canvas, the paintings feature Rostad’s characteristic geometric abstract visual language, with symbolic and ornamental elements inspired by Nordic Primstav traditions. The compositions combine structured geometry, layered symbolism and vibrant colour fields, resulting in a powerful contemporary abstract expression with strong architectural presence. The narrow, vertical format makes the pair particularly striking when installed side by side as a wall installation or spatial artwork.
Both works are mounted in integrated steel and wooden frames, which are an original part of the artist’s presentation. These frames are not later additions but were conceived as part of the artwork itself, reinforcing the sculptural and installation-like character of the pieces.
