Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Like the pink variety thulite, it is used exclusively as a gemstone.
Like zoisite, tanzanite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and usually forms transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on the surfaces. The cleavage surfaces, however, tend to be more nacreous.
