Edwardian antique blackthorn walking stick from the United Kingdom, circa 1900, with a crook handle, a engraved white metal collar, a straight wooden shaft at 90 cm high, and a later rubber ferrule, in good condition with small signs of aging.
Description from the seller
This traditional blackthorn walking stick dates from the Edwardian era, circa 1900, and is a fine example of a classic Irish and British country gentleman’s cane. The stick is made from natural blackthorn (sloe), retaining its characteristic knotted growth, gentle bends and organic irregularities, which give each piece its unique character. The wood displays a rich, warm patina developed through age and use, with natural colour variation typical of well-seasoned blackthorn.
The handle is naturally formed into a crook, smoothly finished and comfortable in the hand. A white metal collar is fitted below the handle, serving both a decorative and reinforcing function. The collar bears hand-engraved decoration and an engraved inscription, adding personal character consistent with period ownership. The metal shows surface wear and light scratches commensurate with age.
The shaft remains straight and sound, with no structural cracks, and retains its traditional rustic appearance. A later rubber ferrule is fitted to the tip for practical use and stability; this is a common and acceptable replacement on working blackthorn sticks and does not detract from the overall appeal.
This is an honest and attractive blackthorn walking stick, valued for its natural form and authenticity rather than overt ornamentation. It represents the enduring appeal of traditional country canes from the turn of the 20th century, equally suited to a collection or continued use.
