The mineral topaz is an island silicate with the chemical composition Al2[6][(F,OH)2|SiO4]. The fluorine (F) and hydroxide ions (OH) indicated in the round brackets can substitute for each other in the formula (substitution, diadochy), but always occur in the same ratio to the other constituents of the mineral. An F-free OH-analogue is known as a synthetic compound.
Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically forms well-developed, sometimes very flat-faced crystals with a short- to long-prismatic or columnar habit and a glassy luster on the surfaces. In pure form it is colorless and transparent. Due to multiple light refractions arising from lattice defects or polycrystalline growth, it can also appear white and, with trace impurities, take on yellow, pink-red to brown-red, violet, light blue, and light green colors, with transparency correspondingly decreasing.
