“Immaculate Conception”
Italian school of the early nineteenth century / oil on lamierino

Large painting of extraordinary beauty and narrative
Measurements: 95 x 73 cm in a late nineteenth/early twentieth century frame / painting: 79 x 53 cm
The work depicts the Virgin Immaculate according to traditional Baroque iconography.
Central figure: Mary is shown frontally, with hands crossed over the chest in a posture of humility and devotion. She wears a white tunic (symbol of purity) and a wide blue mantle that cascades gracefully over the clouds.
Marian attributes: on the head shines a halo made of twelve golden stars, referring to the apocalyptic vision of the “woman clothed with the sun, crowned with twelve stars” (Revelation 12:1).
Iconographic basis: the Virgin rests on a celestial globe, with a serpent under her foot, symbol of original sin conquered by her Immaculate Conception.
Putti angels: around the Madonna three cherubs fly among the clouds: one holds a branch of lilies (symbol of purity), another the palm of martyrdom (alluding to victory over evil and the triumph of faith).
Background: the open sky with luminous clouds helps to emphasize the celestial and glorious dimension of the scene.
