Description from the seller
The subject of the auction is a unique, 19th-century writing set (standish) made in a Victorian style. It is a classic desk accessory from an era when letters and calligraphy were the foundation of communication.
Material: Ebonized wood (noble wood stained to a deep black) with a satin finish.
Construction: Round, contoured base with the era’s characteristic "cog-wheel" edging.
Set components:
Two large inkwells: Equipped with metal inserts (one with a crossbar – a rare detail serving as a pen-rest or drip tray).
Central container with lid: Classic sand shaker or wafer container for sealing.
Small front container: For small accessories (nibs, sponge).
Semi-circular gallery (rear): Integrated stand for 10 dip pens/nibs (metal sleeves).
Metal placard: Decorative element on the front of the base, adding elegance to the whole.
Condition:
The item is in its original antique state. Minor chips in the black patina along the edges (exposing the lighter wood grain), which only emphasize the age and authenticity of the piece. The metal inserts are in good condition, with a patina typical of old metal alloys.
Why it’s valuable:
This is not only a treat for antique collectors and calligraphy enthusiasts but also an exceptionally stylish desk decor piece for an office, study, or home library. Items of this kind, preserved in such a complete form (with a pen gallery), are increasingly rare on the secondary market.
