The garnet group (shortly garnet) is an important group of rock-forming minerals from the mineral class of “silicates and germanates.” Structurally, garnets belong to the island silicates (nesosilicates).

Within the garnet supergroup, which includes all minerals crystallizing with the garnet structure, including those from other mineral classes (e.g., halides, hydroxides), the garnet group encompasses all minerals with 12 positive charges per formula unit at the Z-position. Currently (2013) these are only silicates.

The garnet minerals typically crystallize in the cubic crystal system and predominantly form isometric crystals with the characteristic shapes of the rhombic triacontahedron (older term also granatohedra), isositetrahedra, as well as combinations thereof.
