Description from the seller

Chinese porcelain Wanli pot from Swatow ware of the 16th century. Ming Dynasty, reign of Emperor Wanli (1572-1620)
This small, egg-shaped porcelain pot has a short neck and a wide opening. The decoration on the pot is divided into two panels, each showing a deer in different poses amidst dense foliage. The pot is painted with a dark blue underglaze on a white background. Zhangzhou ware like this was generally known as ‘Swatow ware’, because it was shipped from the port of Shantou (Swatow). This ware was mainly made for export to Japan and Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia. Chinese ceramics were held in high esteem in these countries and were widely used by the nobility and the elite as a status symbol. It was also exported to West Asia and Europe.
