Description from the seller
Large Antique Ceramic Wall Cross / Crucifix – Flanders (Belgium), c. 1920s
In near mint condition – No reserve.
Striking early 20th-century ceramic wall crucifix, executed in sculptural relief with expressive modelling of Christ. This is a highly decorative and atmospheric religious object, produced in Flanders (Belgium) circa the 1920s, a region known for its strong tradition of ecclesiastical ceramics and devotional art.
The piece features a beautifully aged fat glaze with warm earthy tones and subtle greenish hues, giving it a powerful, almost medieval character. The modeling of the corpus is refined and emotionally charged, making this crucifix both a spiritual object and a sculptural decorative artwork.
The reverse bears a pottery mark: “J” within a circle, indicating workshop production. Such marks are typically associated with regional ceramic ateliers active in Belgium and Northern France in the early 20th century, often producing devotional wall objects for churches, chapels and Catholic households.

Wall crucifixes such as this were commonly found in churches, monasteries and private homes, serving both a religious and decorative function. Today, these objects are increasingly collected for their strong sculptural presence and authentic period character.
