A ROMAN BRONZE OIL LAMP WITH A SWAN HEAD HANDLE

Circa 1st-2nd century AD.

The round body with raised, profiled edge set on a low foot ring; with a circular filling hole and an extended nozzle flanked by volutes. The arched handle terminates in a swan head final with naturalistically worked features. The beak of the swan is horizontally pierced, probably to attach a chain with a lid for the filling hole (not preserved).

Attractive and very rare.

Provenance: Numisart auction house, Viennese collection acquired in the 1980s-90s.
