Globe - Moon Globe – Paul Räth, Germany, 1963 - 1960-1970

Rare Space-Age Moon Globe – Paul Räth, Germany, 1963 Rare and historically important Moon globe designed by Paul Räth, published by Paul Räth Nachf. KG, Leipzig, circa 1963. With a diameter of 33 cm and a total height of approx. 42 cm, this is one of the most iconic lunar globes of the Space Race era. This globe was produced before the far side of the Moon was fully mapped and incorporates the groundbreaking discoveries made by the Soviet space probe Luna 3 (1959). It shows the limits of the photographed area of the Moon’s far side, with large unmapped sections intentionally left blank. Newly discovered craters and lunar seas are highlighted in red, many named after Russian scientists, clearly demonstrating Soviet advances in lunar exploration. The globe also marks: • The impact site of Luna 2 (13 September 1959) in Mare Imbrium • The photography boundary of Luna 3 (7 October 1959) • Day/evening limits at the time of observation Printed paper gores (12) with polar calottes are mounted on a Bakelite base, a characteristic material of early 1960s scientific design. The cartouche reads “Räths Mondglobus” and confirms Leipzig production. Condition is not good, as reflected in the price (look carefully at pictures!): • Numerous pinholes • Areas of missing paper, later carefully retouched Despite the damage, the globe remains visually striking, legible, and highly decorative, especially when displayed from a normal viewing distance. Why this globe matters This is not just a globe, but a Cold War artefact — produced to visually communicate Soviet technological superiority during the Space Race. Original Räth moon globes are scarce, and examples of this size are rarely offered on the market. A compelling piece for collectors of: • Space Race memorabilia • Scientific instruments • Cold War design • Lunar and astronomical globes
