A dual‑mode, lighted relief globe from around 1970 in plastic, with a 22 cm diameter and 37 cm height, made for the Dutch market by Rico Florence for ENGI Zwolle, featuring a light-off physical relief and light-on political map with an acrylic meridian and a wood‑look plastic base.
Description from the seller
A fascinating dual-mode relief globe from the early 1970s, representing a collaboration between the Dutch 'Eerste Nederlandsche Globe Industrie' (ENGI) and the Italian specialists Rico Florence.
Historical Background
The Eerste Nederlandsche Globe Industrie (ENGI) in Zwolle began its production journey in 1949, initially utilizing gores from the renowned Kümmerly & Frey. By 1969, the firm transitioned from in-house manufacturing to importing high-quality globes tailored for the Dutch market. This specific model is a prime example of that transition period, manufactured by the esteemed Rico Florence in Italy and distributed under the ENGI brand.
Features & Design
This is a lighted relief globe, designed to provide two distinct perspectives of the world:
• Light Off (Physical): Focuses on the Earth’s topography. The textured surface allows you to feel the mountain ranges, while the colors highlight physical geographical features.
• Light On (Political): Once illuminated, the internal light reveals the political boundaries and country divisions of the era, offering a striking "X-ray" view of 1970s geopolitics.
The globe features a clear acrylic meridian with degree markings, mounted on a sturdy plastic base finished in a warm, classic wood-look aesthetic.
Specifications
• Brand: ENGI Zwolle / Rico Florence
• Origin: Italy (for the Dutch market)
• Period: Approx. 1970
• Diameter: 22 cm
• Total Height: 37 cm
• Language: Dutch
Condition
The globe is in good vintage condition. The map remains vibrant, the relief texture is well-preserved, and the lighting mechanism is functional. The base and meridian show only minor signs of age consistent with a piece of this era.
