Description from the seller
Russian brass icon of Christ Pantocrator 19th century
Beautiful Russian brass icon featuring Christ Pantocrator, also known as the Almighty. This iconographic type belongs to the most fundamental and theologically charged representations within the Russian Orthodox tradition.
Description
The icon shows Christ in half-figure, depicted frontal within a richly ornamented frame with graceful volutes and floral motifs. His right hand is raised in the traditional blessing gesture, with the fingers formed according to Orthodox tradition. In His left hand He holds the Gospel book, symbolizing His teaching and divine authority.
Around the head is the cruciform nimbus, referring to His divine nature and sacrifice. On either side are the usual abbreviations in Church Slavonic script “IC XC,” a shortened designation for Jesus Christ. The facial features are austere and stylized, in strict accordance with the canonical rules of Orthodox iconography. Such cast-brass icons were produced on a large scale in the 19th century and served as personal devotion objects, both for protection and for daily prayer practice.
The warm patina highlights the relief and gives the piece an authentic and well-worn appearance.
