Russisch messing icoon Moeder Gods Hodegetria 19e eeuw

Fraai Russisch messing icoon met voorstelling van de Moeder Gods van het Hodegetria type, een van de oudste en meest verbreide Mariavoorstellingen binnen de orthodoxe iconografie.

Omschrijving
Het icoon toont de Moeder Gods in halffiguur met het Christuskind op haar linkerarm. Met haar rechterhand wijst zij naar Hem, waarmee zij Christus aanwijst als de Weg, de Waarheid en het Leven. Dit theologische gebaar vormt het wezenlijke kenmerk van het Hodegetria type.
Het Christuskind is frontaal weergegeven en houdt een boekrol vast als symbool van Zijn leer. Zijn houding is waardig en zegenend. Rond de hoofden bevinden zich nimbussen en de traditionele afkortingen in kerkslavisch schrift, waaronder “МР ΘΥ” voor Moeder Gods en “IC XC” voor Jezus Christus.

Boven de hoofdvoorstelling is een afzonderlijk register opgenomen met het Mandylion, het niet door mensenhanden gemaakte gelaat van Christus. Dit element versterkt de christologische betekenis van het geheel. De omlijsting is voorzien van gegraveerde kerkslavische tekst die verwijst naar de icoontitel. Het reliëf is scherp uitgewerkt en het messing heeft een warme, natuurlijke patina.

Staat
In redelijke conditie met passende ouderdoms en gebruikssporen. Lichte slijtage op de hogere delen en een gelijkmatige patinavorming in overeenstemming met de leeftijd. Icoon is eerder tentoongesteld aan de wand, vandaar het gaatje bovenin.
