Description from the seller
Beautiful Russian brass icon depicting the Mother of God of the Hodegetria type, one of the oldest and most widespread depictions of Mary in Orthodox iconography.
Description
The icon shows the Mother of God in half-figure with the Christ Child in her left arm. With her right hand she points to Him, thereby indicating Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. This theological gesture constitutes the essential characteristic of the Hodegetria type.
The Christ Child is depicted frontally and holds a scroll as a symbol of His teaching. His bearing is dignified and blessing. Around the heads there are nimbuses and the traditional abbreviations in Church Slavonic script, including “МР ΘΥ” for Mother of God and “IC XC” for Jesus Christ.
Above the main depiction there is a separate register featuring the Mandylion, the face of Christ not made by human hands. This element strengthens the christological meaning of the whole. The frame is adorned with engraved Church Slavonic text referring to the icon title. The relief is sharply worked and the brass has a warm, natural patina.
Period: 19th century
Material: Brass
Origin: Russia
Condition
In reasonable condition with appropriate signs of age and use. Light wear on the higher parts and a uniform patina formation in line with age. The icon has been previously displayed on the wall, hence the hole at the top.
