Russian brass icon of Saint George the Great Martyr and the Dragon with enamel, 19th century
Very beautiful and vividly executed Russian brass icon with multicolor enamel, depicting Saint George the Great Martyr on horseback in combat with the dragon. This depiction counts as one of the most powerful protective icons within the Orthodox tradition.
Description
At the center is Saint George depicted as a mounted saint, seated on a galloping horse. With an outstretched spear he pierces the dragon which writhes beneath the horse. The composition is dynamically arranged and symbolizes the victory of Christian faith over evil. The saint is provided with a nimbus as a sign of holiness. Above the depiction is a Church Slavonic inscription with his name. In the lower right corner is the princess visible, traditionally portrayed as a witness to the salvation. In the background is architecture referring to the city where the miracle took place.
The edge is richly decorated with floral motifs in blue enamel, which strongly frames the central scene. The background of the main image is executed in contrasting shades of blue, green and yellow enamel, which adds depth and liveliness to the relief.
The icon is equipped with a built-in suspension eye and was intended as a home icon or personal devotional object. Such enamelled brass icons were produced in 19th-century Russia and were especially popular as protective icons, particularly among soldiers and travelers.
