Axe, man’s head
Culture Veracruz, Gulf Coast, Mexico
Classic, 450-650 AD
Gray-green volcanic stone with a slightly rough surface
H. 16.5 cm base 26 cm

Man’s head with half-closed eyes framing a small nose with dilated nostrils. Thick lips from which the sculpted tongue projects in high relief. Skull decorated with three spheres aligned one behind the other, imitating buns or perhaps wigs made of cotton balls. At the back, a small angular tenon allowing the axe to be fixed into an architecture.
