The mineral topaz, also known under misleading trade names Finder’s Diamond, Killiecrankie Diamond, Mogok Diamond, Saxon Diamond and Slave Diamond[6], is a common island silicate with the chemical composition Al2[6][(F,OH)2|SiO4].[3] The fluorine (F) and hydroxide ions (OH) given in the round brackets can substitute for each other in the formula (substitution, diadochy), but they always occur in the same proportion to the other components of the mineral. An F-free OH- analog is known as a synthetic compound.[7]

Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and usually forms well-developed and sometimes very plate-like crystals with short- to long-prismatic or columnar habit and a glassy luster on the surfaces. In pure form it is colorless and transparent. Through multiple light refractions due to lattice defects or polycrystalline formation it can also appear white and, with trace impurities, take on yellow, pinkish to brownish-red, violet, light blue and light green colors, with the transparency accordingly decreasing.

With a Mohs hardness of 8, topaz is among the hard minerals and serves as the reference on the Mohs scale that extends up to 10 (diamond). Like diamond, it is also brittle and, relative to the basal plane (001), very easily cleaved along perfectly smooth fracture surfaces, which is often already hinted at by cleavage lines in the stone. Irregularly broken topazes show uneven to somewhat shell-shaped fracture surfaces.
